ASRA Conference 2003

Australasian Sound Recordings Association Conference

"Sound on Film"
at State Records Office, 66 Harrington St, The Rocks, Sydney
9-11 July 2003

Provisional Program

The conference will take as its theme film sound in all its manifestations. This will range from the music recorded for the discs that provided the earliest mechanical sound accompaniment to silent films, to the optical soundtrack - the most common carrier, and to more recently, the magnetic and digital systems. The technologies, the artefacts and the content will be included.

Besides the technical, including many Australian innovations, are the large numbers of Australian film scores, many of them lost because of the haphazard nature of film making up to the 1970's, and an acknowledgment of the role this craft played in giving Australian composers practical work in composition largely denied them by other means. As a record of performance in Australia, many musicians in folk and jazz, for example, would have been lost to us if their activities had not been filmed in some way.

Call For Papers

Papers should be approximately 20 minutes in length and will be considered for publication in the annual ASRA journal.
