ASRA Conference 2009

Australasian Sound Recordings Association

'Endangered Sounds'
National Library of Australia, Canberra
Thursday 20 August and
Friday 21 August 2009

2nd Seminar for 2009

Our second conference for 2009, "Endangered Sounds", set to bring out powerful ideas about the future of our sounds- and their past. Sounds can be lost, in an age where environmental, social and technological change is happening so fast. What can we do about it?

Please see the Conference Program (PDF) for more details.

Over the two days we looked at:

  • saving the sounds of an endangered environment
  • capturing the changing soundscape of human activity
  • dealing with the impermanence of installation and performance works
  • lost in the ether - capturing live radio
  • endangered languages
  • community collections
  • virtual sounds in virtual spaces

Our keynote speaker was William Duckworth, a composer and sound artist whose work connects people, art and archives. Other speakers will include curatorial, technical and archival experts from around Australia, as well as creative and academic practitioners in the sound arts.

The 2009 Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held during the conference.
